Interview with Monster DJ family

Music matters! Especially when you’re a DJ. Our Monster DJ program focuses on establishing close relationships between Monster and DJs. Well, just like the name says. Today we are proud to announce a new addition, his name is DJ Lunis and his motto “Good music has arrived!” does sound very promising, doesn’t it?
DJ Lunis is an integral part of Frankfurt’s club scene and he does not know about – or simply ignores – any musical boundaries. His mixes are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get. Once you try it though, you’ll find it out that it’s full of pleasure.
Monster’s Martin Rabl sat down with him and asked him a few questions. Ladies and Gentlemen…say hi to DJ Lunis!

Monster:

Hello Lunis, welcome to the Monster family! Glad to have you on board. Most people probably know Frankfurt better as the financial heart of Germany but I am sure you could tell our community something about it’s music scene and your resident locations.

Lunis:

Thank you i´m glad to be a part of this awesome family.
Frankfurt is a real metropolis and played a major role in the development of electronic sound in Germany. The city boasts prestigious clubs like Cocoon Club, King Kamehameha, or Robert Johnson.
But Frankfurt has more to offer than this… We have a big urban movement. Live music clubs and an incredible bar culture. Our pioneers are Club Travolta (Worlds Famous Club Member),
Club Kane & Abel or Roomers (Design Hotel) and the Berliner Bar. All of them are also my resident spots. So whatever you are up to Frankfurt´s nightlife will never disapoint you.

Monster:

You describe yourself as someone who doesn’t know any musical boundaries. If I see your name on a flyer and would ask someone what I can expect to hear that night, what would they tell me?

Lunis:

Well, i love to play a mix of urban sound. My style is genre-breaking and open minded. So what can you expect? I’d say finest hiphop, unforgettable dance classics and driving electronic beats mixed together to become the perfect soundtrack of the night.

Let me just describe it with one simple sentence which is my slogan/motto:

Good Music Has Arrived!

Monster:

Ha, that’s certainly a good motto. I am sure it can also be applied to parties! What are your favourite locations with great music outside Frankfurt? Especially now with summer just ahead of us?

Lunis:

Berlin!!! Why?!?!
Because Berlin is a city with an amazing attitude. Full of energy and creative, independent people and artists. I think, it is almost like Frankfurt. Always exciting and futuristic. Never boring.

Monster:

Ah, now I know why I felt like I have to move to Berlin a year ago. Ok, joking. I can totally understand what you’re saying. Even though Berlin is huge and for someone still relatively new to the city it can almost be overhwelming. You got so many options each night that deciding on where to go can take a long time. However, there is no lack of good gigs for sure. Also just like Frankfurt it played a very big role in the early days of German electronic music.

Lunis:

You are absolutely right. Both cities celebrate this sound. My first time in Berlin was like a culture shock. Back then I was very young and not really open minded. In other words: Not ready for this city.

I´ve always considered Berlin as a dirty, uncomfortable place. I could not have been more wrong.

These days I immediately fall in love with the city again everytime I go there. For sure Frankfurt will always stay my homebase but Berlin is seductive.

It’s full of opportunities for erveryone of us. No matter what you want to do you can get your foot in any door. I know so many people who moved to Berlin because it is a lovely city with many opportunities for each individual lifestyle.

Monster:

Personally I’ve never really made the transition from vinyl to digital DJing but am thinking of getting back into it – even if maybe just to use it as a way of listening to music and working with the tracks. How would you say the profession and opportunities changed within the past decade? Any new tricks for an old dog?

Lunis:

Digital djing changed a lot in the recent years. I myself started with vinyls – the golden era! [smiles]

I often reminisce about the early years when i spent a lot of time digging soulfool vinyls. In the year 2000 I started as a „Vinyl DJ“ aka Junkie. In 2006 I made the transition to Digital djing / DVS system. Even after six years of experience with digital djing I never stop learning things. This area is growing so fast. There are no limits for your creativity.

Digital djing offers several benefits:
– having all your music with you at every gig, not just a selection of tunes.
– perfect mixing, harmonic mixing and performance on the next level
– you can remix a tune on the fly without having to buy two copies
– you can play your own records / productions or remix
– features like cueing, looping, keylock, sample player and FX for advance performing
– Live producing and remixing
etc.

The Digital DJ opened the door to a whole new level of creativity. DJs are no longer limited to mash-up genres, loop samples, and experiment with far out F/X. In my opinion this is the single most important evolution through the digital era. It has pushed the envelope of djing beyond traditions of turntables and a mixer.

As you can see, the digital movement is quickly reaching maturity and vinyl is becoming a thing of the past. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which path you’ll take but it’s clear to see that the digital movement is hear to stay. Please don´t misunderstand me, i love vinyl and i still buy records (my own religion) but we are in a whole new era of music performance and now is the time to get on board.

Monster:

I might just do that and thank my vinyls for having been such great buddies in the past. So what do you do when you’re not behind the decks? Any hobbies or special interests?

Lunis:

I´m just a normal guy [laughs]. Sounds strange but it is true.
I´m a shopping NERD…I care very much about my style. I think it´s important to look fresh and clean – like the song from Outkast: So Fresh n So Clean [smiles]
Sport’s great for balancing it all out. Running, cycling, swimming (triathlon).

My other hobbies are filming & cutting, artwork design and sushi, sushi, sushi…did i say sushi? Hell yeah sushi.
The little time left gets spent with my family & friends which is the most important thing for me.

Monster

Ah yes, triathlon is such a normal guy’s thing. How could I forget? [laughs]

Well, Lunis, thanks for your time. Have fun being a Monster DJ and we’ll see you around!

Lunis

Was a great pleasure doing the interview. I am looking forward to this great cooperation. Thanks everyone who supported me in the last few years. You guys are amazing and the true reason of where I am today. I am glad and proud having you around.
